The UK has specific heavy goods vehicle (HGV) restrictions in place to manage traffic flow, reduce emissions, and minimize noise pollution in urban areas. While there is no nationwide truck ban, certain weight and time-based restrictions apply, particularly in London and on some local roads.

For example, HGVs over 18 tonnes face weekend and night time bans on designated routes within London. Additionally, many cities enforce Low Emission Zones (LEZ) and Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ), restricting older diesel trucks.

Clean Air Zones (CAZs) and Emission Regulations

To combat air pollution, several UK cities have implemented Clean Air Zones (CAZs). In these areas, HGVs that do not meet specified emission standards are subject to daily charges. For example, non-compliant HGVs may incur fees of approximately £50 per day in certain zones. Operators are advised to consult local regulations and consider upgrading their fleets to environmentally friendly models to avoid these charges.

London Lorry Control Scheme (LLCS)

A prominent example of localised regulation is the London Lorry Control Scheme (LLCS). This scheme governs the movement of HGVs exceeding 18 tonnes maximum gross weight during designated hours to mitigate noise pollution in residential neighbourhoods. The restricted times are:

  • Monday to Friday: 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM

  • Saturday: 1:00 PM to 7:00 AM on Monday

  • Public Holidays: Restrictions align with standard weekday controls

HGV operators must obtain permission to use restricted roads during these periods. Non-compliance can result in substantial penalties, including fines of £550 for operators and £130 for drivers.
